NYC Fashion Week Review 2014

Fashion Week has come and gone, but the trends established during this fashion exploit will stick around for seasons to come. Some of the most recognizable designers came to New York Fashion Week to present their fall 2015 collections. Fashionistas is here to highlight two designers who we think best represented the trends we will be seeing in future seasons.

Tommy Hilfiger’s fall 2014 line graced the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week runway with ideas that spun off of his definition of the ‘American Explorer’. Hilfiger said his pieces are, “Positioning work-wear, outdoor gear, and the western look altogether.” The use of plaid throughout his line helped created continuity between the three different concepts he aimed to portray. In this look, Hilfiger exemplified the cohesiveness of his varying concepts seamlessly. The use of black leather gave the outdoor look more of a polished work-wear appeal. The fur-lined patches also gave a new twist on traditional western patches. Hilfiger completed the outfit with a flannel plaid skirt.

Tommy Hilfiger’s collection is more rugged, while Phillip Lim took a more polished approach. Phillip Lim’s fall 2014 line portrayed the fierce, cosmopolitan woman. In a backstage interview before the show he stated, “She’s [the cosmopolitan woman] a very culturally curious woman that lives in a world between instant pop and culture. It’s like, do we orbit around her or does she orbit around us. In this look Lim constructed a leather jacket containing similar aspects to Hilfiger. Lim constructed a leather jacket in the style of a cropped jean jacket, with a fur detail on the collar. Lim also decided to pair his leather jacket with plaid bottoms, though he chose a gray and black color scheme for his trousers. ?” To complete the cosmopolitan appeal Lim added a pair of aviator sunglasses.

Phillip Lim and Tommy Hilfiger are designers that exemplified three trends that we believe will dominant the future seasons; fur, leather, and plaid. These two designers are on opposite side of the spectrum in terms of their inspiration for their fall 2015 line, but they came together because they were aware of the trending styles.

We hope this was useful and informative

Winter Polls (Items)

POPULAR ITEMS

One thing I love about winter is being about to wear unbelievably comfortable clothes, while still looking nice. Which brings us to sweaters. Sweaters are, arguably, one of the best articles of clothing a girl can own. I know people swear by the little black dress, but I think a good collection of sweaters is indispensible.

The favorite type of sweater being one of the loose-knit variety. Though chunky knit and cardigan came close behind.

Sweaters polled as the number one way to layer this winter, with jackets and plaid shirts coming in next

Other winter favorites are (of course) jeans and leggings, though cords are also popular. I happen to think cords are great because they are warm, and while being as easy to wear as jeans, they can be a little less casual if you have someplace to go.

Another winter favorite is, of course, a good pair of boots. Everyone opted for comfort on this one. The most popular being combat boots, followed by Ugg boots and then knee-high boots.

Everyone seems to love the infinity scarf, which is so wonderfully cozy and easy to wear.

After scarves, a pair of cozy socks or a warm hat is the next most popular way to accessorize this winter.

All this said, all anyone wants during the winter is to be warm, and your style should reflect that.

I hope everyone has a toasty and warm winter!

Winter Polls (Stores)

Now that winter is finally upon us, everyone needs to switch up his or her wardrobe in order to cope with the colder months. I surveyed the women of GFS’s High School and found a couple of very interesting things.

1. Comfort outweighs fashion when it comes to keeping warm

2.Everyone has her favorite way to stay toasty this winter season.

POPULAR STORES:

Though these three stores seem very different they do share several key points. The first is well made clothes

J-Crew does a good job of keeping integrity by showing photos of their factories in their magazines

The second thing they all have in common is versatility. Many of their clothes can be worn a hundred different ways – which is nice if you are like most high school students and don’t want to spend your college tuition on clothing.

The third thing they all have in common is a focus on pretty clothing that is not only made well, but also easy to wear. All three stores, while boasting runway worthy styles still has items that anyone can wear.

Layers Layers Layers!

Are you stressed because you have to buy a whole new outfit for the cold weather? Well instead of doing that, layer! Not only can you keep warm by putting your comfy sweater over your favorite t-shirt, but there are so many more options! If your button-up collared shirt is not keeping you warm don’t be shy to throw a sweater over it.

You can dress it up with a cute skater or pleated skirt and tights,

Putting a necklace underneath the collar is also a way to add some jewelry without making it look clunky. It also glams up a casual outfit

Another possibility with layers is mixing and matching patterns and textures. Pattern blocking is another huge trend this winter going into fall. Although mixing patterns can be intimidating, one key rule is to match one bold, busier pattern, with a subtler more structured pattern. Floral and vertical stripes are a prime example of this principle (although you won’t see this combo as much in winter trends). Here are some examples:

The Outfit Question: Some Tips To Help You With Your Morning Dilemmas

Check your schedule. If you have to walk around a lot, you may want to wear something comfortable to walk in. Or if you have sports, you can perhaps include a piece of your athletic clothing into your outfit to help you change quickly

Pick a piece you want to wear. I like to choose my bottoms first (shorts, jeans, sweats…). A piece can also be your basketball jersey or your team windbreaker. It can also be your newest purchase that you want to show off

Next, think about what mood your in. Think beyond ‘sleepy’ because that may be just something you’re feeling at that moment. Certain moods can be sweet or sassy, girly or tomboyish (creds: jen im my ultimate fashion guru)
